Best Practice 1

Title of the Practice: Skills for Success :: Capability Enhancement Initiatives

Objectives of the Practice:

• To improve the employability and life skills of the students
• To enlighten the students about the importance of Personality Development in their lives
• To provide equal platform for the slow learners on par with the others through bridge courses and remedial coaching
• To create health awareness among the students
• To offer Career Counseling which enables students to understand their area of interest and get focused on the same and build on their skill sets to emerge victorious
• To train girl students in self defense techniques to save themselves through unarmed combat techniques if required
• To enable students to cope and respond effectively to disasters

Context:

Efficiency is doing things right, effectiveness is doing the right things. Sri ABR Government Degree College, Repalle believes that both of these are immensely important in students’ lives. Therefore it is committed in every sense of the word for the overall development of the students and in this regard the college makes every possible effort to groom students through the conduct of capability enhancement programs. Specialized programs are conducted for students by faculties and external resource persons who help in improving the communication skills, soft skills, employability skills and efficiency of the students.

Practice:

Capability Enhancement Programmes of the college include various programmes arranged for the overall development of the students. Every programme has a faculty as concerned coordinator. The coordinator maintains the details of students enrolled under each programme. All the progrmmes go on par with the vision and mission of the college and cater to the holistic development of the students.
The Departments, special wings JKC and Placement Cell, NCC,NSS,WEC, IYRC of College along with APSSDC are a part of the capability enhancement initiative of the college. They have undertaken various programs which are aimed at capacity building of the students. Some of them are Bridge Courses, Remedial Coaching, Career Counseling and Guidance for competitive exams, personality development, communication and soft skills, Campus Recruitment Training, Analytical Skills, Digital Skills, Health Awareness Programmes, Self Combat Techniques for girls and Free PG entrance coaching for students.

Evidence of Success:

The following are the testimonials of the success of capability enhancement initiatives of the college-
1. Over the last five years around 260 students of our college have got placed in various companies through on and off campus drives with attractive packages
2. 63 students of our college got admitted into various PG programmes during the last five years.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

1. A majority of students give preference to marks rather than knowledge acquisition.
2. Some students find it difficult to put extra effort to undergo these trainings.
3. Poor back ground of students lets them get engaged in livelihood eking tasks rather than sparing time for skill enhancement.
4. As the skill enhancement activities are normally conducted out of the college hours, students hailing from surrounding villages find it difficult to reach their homes after training sessions due to lack of transportation during the late hours.
5. Extra efforts are to be made as the required communication skills area challenge among the students.
6. Paucity of resource persons, other than regular faculty, for conduct of some skill enhancement courses as the college is located in rural area.

Best Practice 2

Title of the Practice: Empowering the Next Generation :: Fostering Social Responsibility among Students

Objectives of the Practice:

1. To instill in students a sense of social responsibility.
2. To inculcate in the students, the quality of giving back to the society a portion of what they get from it.
3. To work towards building a better society by inculcating values.
4. To organize blood donation camps in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society, Repalle Branch and encouraging the students to voluntarily come forward in donating blood and saving lives.
5. To offer voluntary service through NCC and NSS units of college during various local festivals.
6. To involve students in clean and green activities in and around Repalle and adopted villages.
7. To create awareness among villagers through NSS volunteers and NCC Cadets on agriculture, sanitation, nutrition, personal hygiene, AIDS, preventive measures against fevers like Dengue, Swine Flu, Malaria, etc.
8. To cultivate noble attitude ‘Social Responsibility’ among the students through visits to Orphanages and Hospitals.

Context:

Social Responsibility includes concern for the consequences of an individual’s or institution's acts as they affect interests of other people and the environment. Responsibility begins with each person and then extends to working with individuals, groups, community, and the world at large. An increasingly competitive environment and mechanical learning have deprived the present-day students of the opportunity to involve and learn by actively participating in community service. The growing tendency among the students is that the sole purpose of education is getting high-paid jobs, earning money and settling abroad without any concern for community development. The main objective of this practice is to inculcate social values among the students who are the future citizens of India in a society where humanitarian values are becoming extinct. A widespread despondency, passivity, fatalism, and helpless attitude among the villagers make them drag their existence amidst squalor, suffering disease and death. The practice also helps in enlightening and encouraging the volunteers to advocate citizenship and taking good care of the people and the planet earth

Practice:

After taking into account the newspaper reports, Government Surveys, accessibility of the villages and the nature of problems being encountered, Uppudi and Bethapudi villages are adopted by the college. Students frequently visit the adopted villages and motivate the local people about cleaning and sanitizing the unhygienic surroundings and untidy habitats while highlighting their adverse effects on health. They also suggest easy and cost-effective solutions such as safe disposal of wet and dry wastes, safe drinking water etc It is a matter of pride that our College students have donated nearly 200 units of blood in various blood donation camps organized by Indian Red Cross Society. For volunteer services during major local festivals like Shivarathri and Kaarthikapournami the local police initially consult our NCC and NSS teams to manage and control crowd. The staff and students have successfully conducted Swatch Bharat, ODF programs in and around Repalle and inadopted villages. Staff and students occasionally visit orphanages and hospitals to offer the raised donations from the students and faculty of the institution.

Evidence of Success:

Swatch Bharat Program organized by the NSS teams in the adopted villages has brought laurels to this institution.
Needy people were helped to receive blood units from Indian Red Cross Society Blood Bank donated by our student volunteers and staff.
Local police Station officers appreciated our NCC Cadets and NSS Volunteers for their self less service to the people.
Clean and green activities and awareness programmes on and off the campus have brought a cognizable positive change in the attitude of our students.
Their leadership qualities, Self-Confidence, Public Speaking, Problem Solving, and Team Work have improved to a great deal.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

Though the students have succeeded in motivating the rural youth towards health and hygiene and environmental concern, older generations above the age of 50 are conservative and need more time for transformation as most of them are orthodox.
There is a problem of poor integration between the Government and the NGO agencies in the implementation of various beneficial schemes in rural areas. This has resulted in duplicity and redundancy.
Due to lack of awareness on blood donation and myths pertaining to blood donation, some of the students are not interested in donating blood.
Especially girl students are more afraid of blood donation and are reluctant to come forward for this noble cause.
The long serving hours during social service activities at fairs and festivals some of our NCC cadets are becoming sick due to lack of facilities such as rest room etc.
Parents of girl students are reluctant to send their daughters to the NSS Camps and other social responsible activities because of security reasons.
During awareness programs such as prevention of child marriages, AIDS, Clean and Hygiene, the villagers who are mostly illiterate people, are not paying heed to suggestions given by our students and are blindly rejecting them and are arguing with our volunteers on social issues.
Resources required:
* To organize the awareness programs such as prevention of child marriages, awareness on AIDS, improvement of literacy etc. and make them more fruitful, our students need much more guidance and awareness from other resource persons who have sound knowledge about the problem.
* More funds are required to facilitate the students with food and shelter while organizing many more such social responsible programs with an increased number of students.
